Loving Life On A Budget

Mirror To Chalkboard

I love going to Goodwill, because you never know what treasures (or messes) you will find. I try to go in every couple weeks just to see what they have. A couple months ago, I stumbled upon this poor mirror.

Please excuse the mess in the reflection but do enjoy the cuteness that is my dog. Someone had tried to paint this mirror a couple times and had decided to give up. This is how I found it…painter’s tape and all. Someone had tried to paint it orange, and then decided to paint it white. Needless to say, this was a mess! Now, I will be the first to tell you that I am not a fan of mirrors. So I decided to turn this into a chalkboard for my craft room. I had some chalkboard paint left over from making chalkboard coasters at Christmas, so I scraped away all the painter’s tape and started painting.

With any project, you find something you should have done differently. In this case, I think I should have painted the frame before painting the mirror. I’m not sure it would have made a difference, but it’s something I may try next time. I had a hard time getting clean lines and keeping the paint off the chalkboard area.

I bought this beautiful spa blue paint from Hobby Lobby. I fell in love with this color, and none of the pictures of the finished product really show how pretty this color truly is. I did not need anywhere near this amount of paint, but it was the only size they had, so I bought it anyway (with a coupon, of course).ย Spa Blue Designer Series Acrylic Paint

Then I decided the frame was a little too plain. So I used this great tutorial to make some burlap flowers. Here is my finished product.

I’m really pleased with how it turned out. I wish I had a pretty white wall to put it on, but that is just not the case. This quote is my inspiration for the week as I study to take my tests to keep my teaching certification.

Coach Purse at Goodwill

I’ve been meaning to post this for a while, but I kept forgetting! A couple months ago, I found my best Goodwill find yet! Yes, I found this Coach purse for $15!

Coach Purse

Not only is this purse brand new, it still has all the papers inside and plastic on the handle. I never thought I would own one of these, because they are so expensive. This just shows you can find some really great deals at Goodwill no matter where you live. You don’t have to spend a fortune to have nice things. I haven’t used this purse yet. Even though I didn’t pay a lot for it, I still want to keep it nice. I may never own one of these again! ๐Ÿ™‚

Frugal Date Idea

My husband and I met in college. After we got married, we ended up living near the university. This has provided us with some great frugal date nights! Recently, we went to dinner at a restaurant in this college town and then walked across the street to watch part of a soccer game (free!). I will be the first to admit I know nothing about soccer, but we sat and talked while enjoying a very nice evening. We had fun trying to figure out what was going on in the game. Sometimes it’s not about where you go together, it’s about being out the house and enjoying each other’s company. Last week we went to the basketball exhibition game, which was also free! If you live near a college, university or tech school, check out their sports webpage and find out which sports have free admission. It’s a great outing and you can cheer on the local teams. Even if the games are not free, some have very cheap ticket prices. Go Team! ๐Ÿ™‚
